Heart Attack; Causes and Symptoms

What is heart attack?
If the heart muscle does not have enough blood (and consequently oxygen) it dies and a heart attack occurs. Another name for a heart attack is myocardial infarctioncardiac infarction and coronary thrombosis. According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary, a heart attack is "infarction of a segment of heart muscle, usually due to occlusion of a coronary artery". (Infarction = the process whereby an area of dead tissue is caused by a loss of blood supply).

A heart attack usually happens when a blood clot develops in one of the blood vessels that lead to the heart muscle (coronary arteries). The clot, if it is big enough, can stop the supply of blood to the heart. Blood supply to the heart can also be undermined if the artery suddenly narrows, as in a spasm.

What are the causes of a heart attack?

  • Age - this is considered to be the largest risk factor. When a man is over 45 years, and the woman is over 55 years of age, their risk of having a heart attack starts to rise significantly.

Scientists from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, found that the visible physical signs of aging, such as the accumulation of fatty deposits on the eyelids and baldness are associated with a higher risk of developing heart disease and having a heart attack.

Senior researcher, Anne Tybjaerg-Hansen, said "The visible signs of aging reflect physiologic or biological age, not chronological age, and are independent of chronological age."

The researchers found that a receding hairline, baldness, earlobe crease and xanthelasmata (fatty deposits around the eyelids) increased heart attack risk by 57% and ischemic heart disease by 39%.

They presented their findings at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2012 in Los Angeles.

  • Angina - angina is an illness where not enough oxygen is reaching the patient's heart. This raises the risk of a heart attack. In some cases a diagnosis of angina was wrong - it could have been a mild heart attack instead. The main difference between a heart attack and angina is that the patient with angina will feel better about 15 to 30 minutes after taking medication, while the heart attack patient won't.

  • Blood cholesterol levels - if a person's blood cholesterol levels are high, he/she runs a higher risk of developing blood clots in the arteries. Blood clots can block the supply of blood to the heart muscle, causing a heart attack.

  • Diabetes - people with diabetes have a higher risk of developing several diseases and conditions, many of them contribute to a higher risk of heart attack.

  • Diet - a person who consumes large quantities of, for example, animal fats, or saturated fats, will eventually have a higher risk of having a heart attack.

  • Genes - you can inherit a higher risk of heart attack from your parents, and/or their parents.

  • Heart surgery - patients who have had heart surgery have a higher risk of having a heart attack.

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure) - this could be due to lack of physical activity, overweight/obesity, diabetes, genes, and some other factors.

  • Obesity, overweight - as more and more people are overweight, especially children, experts believe heart attacks will become more common in future (if the overweight children become overweight adults).

  • Physical inactivity - people who do not exercise have a much higher risk of having a heart attack, compared to people who exercise regularly.

  • Previous heart attack - anybody who has already had a heart attack is more likely to have another one, compared to other people.

  • Smoking - people who smoke heavily or regularly run a much higher risk of heart attack, compared to people who never smoked and those who gave up. Smoking regularly means smoking every day.
7 Warning Signs Of A Heart Attack

Whilst a heart attack can often be sudden and unannounced, most other times, the condition develops over a period of time. You can read the warning signs and take the necessary precautions if you pay heed.
Here are 7 signs that can be taken as warning and could help avert a catastrophic situation:

1. Discomfort in the Chest

The most common warning sign of a heart attack is the feeling of discomfort or heaviness in the chest. This feeling could also be more of a burning sensation. Any of these symptoms should not be taken lightly, and if it occurs more than once, you need to rush to your doctor. If another person is complaining of the problem, chances are they have experienced the feeling before and are only expressing it now. So, rush them to the nearest doctor or hospital immediately for a check up.

2. Shortness of Breath

If your breathing gets heavy and the breath falls short even after a short walk, climb or other form of movement or exercise, it should be a huge cause of worry. Even if this condition is not accompanied with chest discomfort, it should be taken as a warning sign.

3. Sweating

Whilst sweating is inevitable in the scorching heat of May and June, excessive sweating even in cool conditions is uncalled for. If you notice such sweating, consult a medical professional immediately.

4. Nausea

Regularly feeling nauseous of dizzy could imply the onset of a heart attack. Do not treat is callously as a sign of tiredness. This could happen due to the artery getting blocked. It could also display itself via excessive stress, fatigue after short spans of movement or exercise, or a feeling of weakness despite eating and sleeping well.

5. Numbness in Arms

If your arms feel numb and seem to be drifting to the sides, heart problem may be the cause.

6. Unresponsiveness

If certain parts of your body begin to stop responding, do not ignore the circumstance. The affected parts may be the shoulders, arms or back of the neck.

7. Slurring while Speaking

Difficulty while speaking need not necessarily occur after a bout of drinking with the buddies. It could be a graver situation than that! Inability to speak coherently could be the sign of a great attack. If you think you are suffering this ask a friend or relative to help by asking them to understand what you are saying.
A heart attack can be avoided if the warning signs are read correctly and in time. Seek medical aid immediately if one or more of the above symptoms are noticed. They could be the result of a choked artery. Even if heart attack is not the result, a check up should definitely not be avoided! Take care!

Gate 2013 Civil Engineering Review, Cutoff

GATE 2013 for civil engineering was first time an online exam. Even though some changes in pattern were expected, the exam had great changes in its pattern and in its usual trend of asking questions. First time they introduced questions where we have to type the answers. Even-though it was confined to numerical answers, it seems to be so tricky and candidates find it difficult to answer such questions as they don't had confidence to give the answers to such questions. There was only 2 such questions in mock exam, but unexpectedly there were more than 10 such questions in the actual gate test. But these questions did not had negative marks. Thanks to Gate exam..!!
The exam had questions from new fields esp form structural engineering. The usual trend of asking questions like from matrices in maths, treatment plant in environmental engineering etc was missing this time.

Cutoff marks
With the unusual trend and new pattern the questions seems to be easy for those who prepared  really serious about the exam. Those knowing the basics and studied deeper could easily answer 35 plus answers. Thus this time cut off marks is expected nearly 28 to 32.

this post will be updated on more news from iitb who conducted the exam. Like this page on Facebook by clicking the button on the top right of this page for latest updates.

After pursuing Bachelor degree in engineering, all engineering students stand at the platform to choose their secure and bright career ahead. A majority of engineer opt their career in management or Post graduation (M.E. / M.Tech). A majority of engineering college are not able to give 100% placement to their students as a fresh graduate engineer. The rate of unemployment for engineers is increasing very fast due to economic factors.

A graduate engineer spend 4 year of time with great sum of money to get Engineering degree in different streams, after the completion of their course they are bound to work in Software companies not as their first choice, but to get satisfied their family with their job. As major recruiter are companies which deals in software developments &
IT services.

A large number of Civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics engineer are working as a software developer on various platform. They literally spoil their hard learned technical knowledge for the sake of jobs. Although in recent year recession affects are global and jobs are secured in IT based industries. A numbers of vacancies are left in government based organization for fresh engineers like BSNL,UPSC,DRDO,ISRO,ONGC,GAIL,HAL,NTPC and several top PSU’s.

In order to get admission in M.E. / M.Tech the examination that holds significant importance on national as well as international level is GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) . You need to qualify GATE for admission in post-graduation programmes with good score. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), is an All-India examination that holds high significant and is conducted in eight zones across India by the GATE committee.

The main objective of GATE test is to identify the quality of students and assess their potential to continue higher education. By conducting GATE examination, it becomes easy to evaluate the students with technical & non- technical skill at defined scale and consistency to pursue higher studies in the field of engineering at IISC, NITs and
IITs.

The questions of GATE examination are usually the derivation of basic fundamentals of their engineering subjects and preparation of GATE is an ongoing process and is supposed to take place at beginning of their engineering stages.

TIPS & TRICKS for GATE Examination:
•Prepare your best with the fundamentals of engineering subjects and then test yourself those
fundamentals.
•Selection of proper book is very important with the choice of subjects. There are students who prepare at home with the number of book options available in the market today.
•Analysis of pattern and standard of papers is very important to prepare the subjects or topics.
Make fresh notes of related topics & keep revising on regular intervals.
•Correspondence coaching courses or postal coaching material will give a concise way to learn the facts of the subjects but material cannot be assessed until one goes through the same word by word with detailed theory. Hence GATE aspirants can go by some tips of their guide and mentor. Those who are getting regular classroom coaching need to confirm their raise their interest of learning. Coaching institute suits their requirement in the way of preparation with following parameters:
• Distinct Study Material that defined the key concepts with major analytical problems which
help you to solve the problem. There are several standard books on each subject by good
authors which can make your study enjoyable as well as interesting.
• While studying theory, conceptualization one needs good books, which can really put our brain
on exercise. We ensure that our coaching institute has a collection of good and informative
books.

Samsung shows off 'unbreakable' phone which rolls up like paper

(startitnew had already published this news in 2011 much before other websites did so now)

The screen uses the same OLED - organic LED - technology as many current smartphones, but encased in plastic instead of glass.

Samsung wowed an audience in Las Vegas this week with a working mobile phone screen which can be rolled and unrolled like a sheet of paper.

The screen kept working as it was rolled and unrolled - showing off that it is far more flexible than previous 'bendable' screens.

The screen uses the same OLED - organic LED - technology as many current smartphones, but encased in plastic instead of glass.

The prototype device is built to be "virtually unbreakable", Samsung claims.

The device was shown off by Brian Berkeley, senior vice-president of Samsung Display, at a presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

“Our team was able to make a high resolution display on extremely thin plastic instead of glass, so it won’t break even if it’s dropped,” said Berkeley.
“This new form factor will really begin to change how people interact with their devices, opening up new lifestyle possibilities.”

The new display is called “Youm."

Berkeley also showed off a smartphone prototype equipped with a curved edge, which works almost like a 'second screen' around the edge of the device.

The Korean technology company remained quiet on when flexible phones might go on sale.

Why Delhi is so bitterly cold?

New Delhi, Himachal, J&K, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, UP and Rajasthan, cold has spared none.
Why Delhi is so abnormally cold this season. Scientists too are unable to find the prime reason behind the chilly winds that have made days so night-like. This is certainly abnormal, say the scientists. The thick fog has cut down the solar radiation and heat reaching the earth.
Weather scientists say Delhi had been experiencing the cold due to continuous fog and icy winds from the Himalayas.
The national capital registered a record dip in the temperature as the mercury dipped to 1 degree Celsius.
Meanwhile, cold wave is Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar is expected to continue for the next few days.
A media report quoted a weather scientist as saying, "Before 1997, we used to have more days with clear skies which kept the days warm". The reason for the continuous fog is higher levels of pollution, he added.
Besides the chill in the Capital, many parts of north India recorded sub-zero temperatures, say reports.
According to a TOI report, January is usually considered the coldest month of Delhi winter, but the number of days with both the minimum and maximum temperatures remaining 'below normal' appears to be going up. In 1999, just two days in a row had seen both cold nights and cold days. The number of such days went up to three in 2003 and to four in 2010. In 2013, the number has already reached five.
A western disturbance that has prevailed in the northern parts of the country has brought cold winds and this explains the severe cold wave conditions.
A weather scientist was quoted by the media as saying moisture brought by a western disturbance in UP last week was trapped in the mid-tropospheric level preventing the Sun's radiation from reaching the earth. This aggravated the cold condition in the north.
Patna met director A K Sen was quoted in a TOI report as saying, "Extreme day cold condition has aggravated the chill. It all happened due to a western disturbance in west UP last week, which also reached Bihar borders. However, we did not receive rain as the condition shifted towards Nepal. But the moisture brought with the disturbance was trapped in the mid-tropospheric level (1.5 to 4km above the earth's surface), preventing the Sun's radiation from reaching the earth. We hope that the moisture will start clearing up in few weeks."

Punishment for rape: Discussion forum

IMF Chief and French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn got caught raping his hotel maid in New York. This led the French to say that American law is tougher on rape than French law.  In fact the London Daily Mail reports that current French President Sarkozy warned Strauss-Kahn about American prosecution for sex crimes, ‘Over there they don't joke about this sort of thing,’ Sarkozy reportedly said.

I was wondering if this was really true, and I tried to look up rape sentences. This turned out to be hard to do; for example the US has different laws in each state, but the average time served is 5.4 years nationwide; the average sentence is 11.8 year.

In France the standard sentence is 15 years. 20 years for raping a minor. 30 years for killing the victim, and over 30 years for torture. Many countries have similar escalating sentences.

This is cobbled together from a variety of sources.

There are a number of countries where the punishment is death. In Britain the punishment is "life" although I bet there is more subtlety than that.

Finally the Bible says that  a man raping a woman has to pay the father a 50 shekels of silver, and then marry the woman. Raping a married woman is punishable by death.

In INDIA

The recent shocking news of gang rape of a girl in bus in the capital city has spread a fire in minds of all Indians regarding the safety of women in India. Various countries all over the globe have strict rules  regarding the action against the 'criminals'. In the Indian Penal Code too strict rules are mentioned (Section 376 in The Indian Penal Code, 1860). But do you think its just words? What is the role of government if it cannot provide the security of its citizens? What is the significance of the fundamental right, Right to Life and Liberty? What's your suggestion about the new rules/ system that should come up for the safety of our girls, our sisters, our motherland.? Post in the comment box below.
